New and improved ATO website
Have you seen the Australian Tax Office’s new website www.ato.gov.au? It has been upgraded and improved and whilst I realise there are probably some teething issues, overall, the information is in a simpler layout and easier to find.
I found the timing of its release in late June added to the already high stress levels of Year End. However, post year end, I can appreciate the improvements it has to offer.
One tool I have found particularly useful, is the Small Business Assist Tool. This provides easy access to information for both new and established businesses on a range of topics. You simply type in a question and it will provide tailored information from a range of websites. The information is displayed in an easy-to-read format.
Information can be found on a range of topics including:
- registering for an Australian business number
- understanding and registering for GST
- employer obligations
- lodging activity statements.
New ATO App
The new app, ATO Tax 2013, is available free from the Apple Appstore and Google Play. It provides information on lodging your return, answers frequently asked questions and lets you monitor the progress of your return. You also have direct links to the ATO website and Hot Tax Topics that uses a handy little tool called SuperSeeker.
New Digital Magazine
The ATO has also released a new digital magazine called Taxtime. Taxtime is for tablet devices and gives you the information you need to do your tax.
Available through Google play™ and Apple app store, Taxtime includes:
- what’s new this year
- video clips and top tips
- easy to understand tax return instructions and
- links to tools and calculators to help you prepare your return.
